A graduate of Horace Mann H.S., the National Theatre Institute, Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University’s School of the Arts (MFA), Steve has had 12 books published, including two memoirs and two books of poetry.He has also written two original screenplays, The Falling Man (which has received several awards) and The Big Dog Rules (with Ralph Pezzullo).

Steve was the first literary manager for Primary Stages Company in NYC, 1986-91. He has taught writing workshops on the high school and college levels, and he has been an Artist in the Schools several times. In addition, Steve is a member of the LA-based artists collective Pharmaka and has written essays and copy for exhibition catalogues.

He has been the recipient of a Federal Poetry Grant, two Shubert Foundation grants and many other grants. He had plays chosen for development at the Shenandoah Playwrights Retreat in 1990, 1993 and 1995. He has completed residences at the Byrdcliff Artists Colony and the Dorset Writers Colony.
